Mini Deep Fryer

Deep FryerIt’s a mini deep fryer. You know, for when it’s just too much work to take your Fry Daddy out and make some greasy fried foods.

What’s next? One for taking on the road? One for the bedroom?

If you just need to have something like this, chance are, you probably really don’t need it. Chances are, nobody needs this.

Then again, you can fry up some Coke and avoid going to the state fair all together.

A Picnic

We went on a picnic yesterday at the park, and attempted to put Julia in a swing. Naturally, she didn’t take too well to it.

While on a walk, I notice a bunch of blue lockers near a trailhead. I looked a little closer, and there were bikes inside, apparently provided by Dasani. It sounds like a great idea. You give them a deposit, and you can take a Trek Criuser bike out all day.

After a little bit more research, this program isn’t very widespread. You can check out Dasani’s website, but it’s all flash, so there’s no links from here. All in all, it looks pretty neat.

Smoking Manners

Don't SmokeI stumbled upon this site earlier and found the graphics to be hilarious. I don’t know any Japanese, but it looks like they are trying to tell you to be considerate to others when you do smoke.

Baby Food Pundit

We were grocery shopping last week and ran upon a box of baby cereal with a sticker on it.

Now I’m not one to read into political commentary gathered from the baby food aisle. However, I found this quite amusing, and as luck would have it, we had the camera with us.

Should I Get an MBA?

I have been facing a dilemma for the last few weeks. I have had a nagging feeling that I want to do something more than what I am doing now. An obvious path is to go back to school. But what would I go back to school for? To get an M.S. in Chemical Engineering?

Currently, I don’t use much of my ChemE degree. So getting an M.S. in that wouldn’t really do much. So I thought about maybe pursuing a different engineering degree. What degree, I don’t know. Maybe an EE degree.

I could also get an MBA. UNCG has an MBA program. I’m only about 15 minutes away, and I can get a tuition reimbursement from work. The only downside is that it would take about four years, taking a couple classes at a time.

The only problem with that? I’m not really planning on being here another four years, especially four years, starting August 2007. Then again, I wasn’t really planning on being here five and a half years, either.

What do you think? Is getting an MBA really worth it?

The New Ivies

According to Newsweek, RPI is among 25 “new Ivies.” Well, I can tell you that if tuition costs alone were taken into consideration, RPI has been an Ivy League school for quite some time.

But I do admit it is pretty nice to see that RPI getting some attention in the national press. Maybe people won’t just give me blank stares when I tell them I went to RPI. Here’s a typical exchange:

Them: Where did you go to school?
Me: RPI.
Them: RPI? Where’s that?
Me: New York.
Them: Oh. Rochester…
Me: No, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Them: …
Me: It’s an engineering school.
Them: Oh. Okay.

Now maybe it’s just a southern thing. And I don’t have this same exchange with everyone that asks. But it is a bit disconcerting when you go to a top engineering school, and very few people around have heard of it.

Lazy? Or Clever?

I noticed a post on Lifehacker about a book called Moving Heavy Things. The book wasn’t what caught my attention, it was a quote in the post: “…the cleverest people are often the laziest: they are always looking for an easier way.”

So am I lazy because I’m clever? Or just clever because I’m lazy?

Also, while looking at this book on Amazon, I noticed a couple new features. There’s stats on the most common words or how difficult the text is. It reminds me of stats you can find in Word when trying to count the number of words in the document. You even get how many words you get per ounce and dollar. This book comes 686 words per ounce and 590 words per dollar. I looked at a couple other books, and didn’t notice the same stats.

Useless eBay Auctions

Sharon was looking at auctions on eBay, and ran across one selling expired Enfamil checks.

It’s four dollars in useless checks. Obviously, no one has bid on it. Who in their right mind would pay at least a dollar (plus shipping!) for expired checks?

Apparently, someone will. Here’s another auction, where someone bought $20 in expired checks for $16.50. There’s no guarantee that a store will even accept them. But someone is willing to take that chance to save a whopping $3.50.

A Big Motorcyle…

I was taking Susan back to the airport last night and listening to the radio. There was a commercial for the Vulcan 2000. My first thought was, “A 2-liter motorcycle? Why?”

So I hopped online, and found the Vulcan 2000. Now this motorcycle is all of 750 lb, and has a larger displacement than my car. It’s only a 1.8 liter, but it a turbo. Why in the world does someone need that large of an engine on a motorcycle?

Maybe someone can help me out here…

Don’t Fly USAir…

While reading one of my favorite sites, I read an article about guy who had what sounds like the worst trip ever. Listen to the audio, it’s worth it.

I post this here because the flight originated here in Greensboro. What followed was one screw-up after another, with USAir not caring at all along the way.

If you needed a reason not to fly USAir, here you go. I’ll be sure to avoid them.
