My Canon Powershot A700 Review

I have wanted a Canon Digital Rebel for a long time. I already have a Canon Rebel and an Olympus digital camera. But the Rebel takes film, and the Olympus is just old. I’ve had it for 3 or 4 years.

Since Julia was born, Sharon and I have been taking photographs like mad. The Olympus was too slow, ate batteries like candy, and only took mediocre pictures. The Rebel took much better pictures, but I paid for every pictures I took. We needed a new camera.

I tried to convince myself that I needed a Digital Rebel. The PMA, a huge photography trade show, was to be held at the end of February. I thought that a successor to the Digital Rebel XT would be announced, and I could get the XT on the cheap. Canon had other ideas, and announced a higher end model. I almost gt the Digital Rebel anyway.

I found the Canon Powershot A700 instead. It was only introduced in February, so I couldn’t find any reviews on it. So I took a chance on it anyway. I’m glad I did.

Pros:

  • Totally manual control – 1/2000″ to 15″, f/2.8-8.0, ISO 80-800, and manual focus
  • Huge LCD screen
  • Movie mode – with sound! It will do 640×480 at 30fps until you fill out the memory card
  • Good image sensor
  • 6x optical zoom (like 35-210mm)
  • Picture burst mode – it will take about 2 pictures a second for a while. I’ve taken 60-70 in a single burst before I stopped.

Cons:

  • Still a delay between pressing shutter and taking picture
  • 16MB SD card included – give me a break, that’s like 6 pictures at the highest settings
  • Autofocus could be better

So there you have it. For $300, you can get your hand on a very nice point and shoot digital camera with full manual control.

One Month Old

Julia

Julia turned one month old on Tuesday. We also gave her a bath for the first time on Tuesday. Her umbilical cord didn’t fall off until last Monday, so we couldn’t give her a real bath until it fell off. We tried to take some pictures of Julia all dressed up for her one month birthday. Here, or here, for pictures.

Since I haven’t been doing anything lately (yeah, right), I’ve posted more photos online. Photos on my site, Flickr, and Zoto.

Bunches of Baby Pictures

I’ve been struggling lately with how I want to display the photos I’ve posted online. I like the concept of Flickr, where I can tag my photos, and I’ve been working on integrating it with my blog. Here’s a test site that uses Flickr on my site.

Using Flickr is fine and all, but I tend to like Zoto better. I like the interface more and there’s no monthly upload limit. But I haven’t found any tools to really integrate it with WordPress.

Of course, I can just host them on my site like I have been doing all along. But I don’t like the organization that I’ve got on that.

Anyway, there’s plenty of pictures of Julia around. Enjoy!

Comparing Julia with Susan

After Julia was born, Sharon thought she looked a lot like me. We were curious to see my baby pictures and compare them with Julia. We also wanted to see how she looked compared to Susan as a newborn. Susan sent us a picture as a newborn, and the similarities are striking. Susan put the pictures side by side and sent it to me.

Susan and Julia

Obviously, Susan is on the left, Julia on the right. It’s amazing how similar they look.

Two Weeks

So we’re getting into that home stretch here. Sharon’s due date is only a couple weeks away, and she could into labor at any time now. I’ve taken some pictures of Sharon’s progression.

36 weeks 36 weeks, side 36 weeks, front
38 weeks 38 weeks, side 38 weeks, front

Sharon has also taken a poll of about 40 people at work to see when they think Sharon will have the baby, how much the baby will weigh, and if the baby is a boy or girl. The average guess is that she will have the baby on February 10, and the baby will be about 7 and a half pounds. It was just about 50/50 on boy or girl. Our doctor is guessing 8 pounds, and the due date all along has been February 11.

Princess Fiona Pictures

My last few posts have been a bit on the serious side (well, except for TV), so I’ve decided to lighten it up a bit. Sharon brought it to my attention that I haven’t written anything about Princess Fiona since October.

The kitty has been doing well, and hasn’t really been up to anything. She is still as vicious as ever, but to be honest, we do provoke that kind of behavior. So here’s a couple pictures of the kitty, sitting in a box (one of her favorite pasttimes) and jumping out of the crib.

Of course, there’s more pictures on her section of the photo gallery.

The beginning of the end for film cameras

I knew this day would eventually come. Nikon will be phasing out most of their film camera line. A high end camera and a lower end camera.

I’m a Canon man myself, and I use film, so this announcement doesn’t immediately affect me. But it wouldn’t surprise me to see Canon eventually follow suit and start to phase out their film line as well. I prefer my film camera to my digital, but my digital camera isn’t that good. I like to have the total manual control of my Canon Rebel.

Eventually, I would like to get a digital Canon Rebel, but I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of my film camera. There’s something refreshing to hear the shutter click and the film advance.

Mr. Bush, Meet Einstein (The Robot)

bush and robot

I saw this picture online of Bush shaking hands with an Albert Einstein-headed robot. The caption of the photo says the robot stands 54″ tall. So that makes the guy in the background all of what? Five feet tall?

Also, why did they put a head modeled after Einstein on top? To make it seem more human? All it looks like now is a robot with a silly head on top.
