Kaitlyn Makes a Pretzel

We were doing a little shopping yesterday, and I found a pretzel making kit. It included all the yeast and flour needed. At the time, it seemed like something good for Julia and Kaitlyn to do with Grandma and Grandpa B.

Kaitlyn really enjoyed it, as demonstrated by this video.

She sure knows how to take credit for her handiwork!

Ocean City, Part 3

We finished up our vacation in Ocean City by taking a ride in a pontoon boat. The kids loved it. There was practically no traffic out on the bay and it was absolutely beautiful.

Being out in the sun like that for two hours wiped the kids out. Julia and Kaitlyn struggled to stay awake after our two hour tour. But they slept quite well on the way back home.

Ocean City, Part 2

After playing on the beach to start off our vacation in Ocean City, it seemed like a fun idea to go crabbing. So we got some traps, and found out that crabs like to each chicken necks. We couldn’t find any, so drumsticks would have to do.

It was windy that day, so it was hard to see into the water. We never really knew if we had caught any crabs, so we pulled up our crab traps randomly.

At the end of our adventure, I ended up catching two crabs. Dad and Isaac didn’t catch any. Skill? Not a chance. I just got lucky.

Ocean City, Part 1

We went to Ocean City, MD for a few days last week.

The first day there, we went to the Boardwalk and played on the beach. Julia and Kaitlyn loved playing in the sand and going in the ocean. It was quite the departure from their last visit to the beach last year.

But that’s not all we did while in Ocean City. More pictures to come later in the week.

Air and Space Museum

Continuing our weekend in DC, we went to the Air and Space Museum next to Dulles. In short, it was awesome. Seeing all those airplanes and the space shuttle up close was great. The kids were relatively well behaved, likely because it wasn’t crowded and there was a ton of room for the girls to run around.

There was only one major complaint. There was only one food choice there (McDonalds), and it was outrageously priced (probably a 25-40% premium over a typical store). Of course, you could leave the museum, if you take food along and leave it in a cooler in your car, then go to the picnic area outside. But since we didn’t know there was a picnic area there, that wasn’t an option for us.

Anyway, we had a really good time there.

National Zoo

We went to DC last weekend to visit Susan and Isaac. Our first stop was the zoo. It was hot that day, so the animals were pretty inactive and trying to stay in the shade. We didn’t get to see everything, but did manage to see the pandas (also sleeping).

All in all, we had a pretty good time at the zoo, and stopped at 2Amys for some delicious pizza.

Following up our trip to Dutch Wonderland, we stayed in the area for the weekend. We went to the Strasburg Railroad, where Julia and Kaitlyn found the trains to be interesting. We didn’t bother riding the train on this trip, because (1) it was $40, and (2) I think they would have gotten bored very quickly. And with nowhere to go for an hour except sit in your seat isn’t all that much fun, regardless of what’s going on outside the train.

After visiting the railroad, we went to Intercourse to do all the typical Amish Country stuff. The trip to the Intercourse Pretzel Factory was a let down. They offered factory tours, but it was really just a demonstration in rolling your own pretzel, and not much else. At least the kids did get a piece of dough to play with. We followed that up with a trip to Shady Maple, a ridiculously sized smorgasbord. Unfortunately, Julia had just been woken up from a nap when we got there, so she was cranky and refused to eat anything there. By the time we were all done, she was just coming around. Fortunately, Kaitlyn was well behaved, and was happy just eating watermelon.
