I’ve started a new blog about dumb crook news. I hear about this kind of stuff on the radio once in a while, and it’s almost always funny to listen to.
If you hear (or commit) anything that sounds like it would go on dumb crook news, let me know.

The Senate failed to raise the minimum wage again, keeping it at $5.15 an hour. Now $5.15 in 1997 is worth $4.37 today, according to this Inflation Calculator.
Funny how since 1997, Congress has voted themselves $28,000 in raises. Hey, you know, they have to look out for themselves.
A high school student makes an anti-Bush poster for his civics class, gets it printed up at a Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart employee calls the cops, the cops call the Secret Service, the Secret Service takes it to a U.S. attorney, who finally gets some common sense and decides not to prosecute.
As if I needed another reason not to do business with Wal-Mart, here’s just another example. It’s none of their damn business what I want to print up. The picture in question (a thumbtack through Bush’s forehead with a thumbs-down sign) breaks no laws at all, but since a Wal-Mart employee wants to be in the thought police, the student gets investigated. Where do we draw the line? If someone does something “un-American,” can anyone “turn them in?”
So the iPod now plays videos. This, after I remember Steve Jobs saying he didn’t see much need for an iPod to play videos a year or two ago.
Don’t know about you, but I can’t say I would be a big fan of staring at a 2.5″ (320 x 240px) screen to watch videos. The battery life also makes watching movies iffy – it’s only rated for 2 hours. But there is an AV cable for hooking it up to a TV.
I found this art project, and it is quite interesting.
He made 15,000 bubbles and placed them on ads and other pictures around NYC. Random people filled in the bubbles with whatever they wanted. Pictures of the results were taken, categorized, and put up for the world to see.
This site has a lot of really neat simulations where you can play with different parameters. The math involved in each is also shown, but I wasn’t really looking at the the math behind it, it was just neat to see everything in action.
I like the roller coaster simulations best. Make sure you have Java enable when looking at the site.
The DARPA Grand Challenge was run today. After last year’s running, in which the furthest a team went was 7.5 miles, 3 4 teams have actually finished the race, going 130 miles without any intervention.
I think the progression seen over the last 18 months in just amazing. From going just a short distance to completing the entire race over that time shows just how quickly innovation can take place. I’m not sure what the next event will bring, but it sure will be interesting to watch.
So this is what beer looks like under a microscope. This is my kind of science. They look really neat, almost like fractals.
It looks like Atari is jumping on the retro bandwagon by re-releasing the Atari 2600.
In college, I remember driving by a yard sale one weekend, and they had an Atari 2600. We got it, along with a collection of games, and playing a bunch of old-school games. For $30, with 40 games built in, it might be worth looking into.
