Babykeeper

It’s the [tag]Babykeeper[/tag], or, as the picture might suggest, your own personal toilet paper dispenser. Simply put, it’s a harness that you hook on to a bathroom stall. They hang there and watch you do your business. Then hand you toilet paper.

Seriously though, this could be handy for people who have to use the bathroom while they are out alone with their child. But carrying something around like this just doesn’t seem practical to me.

Super Knife

Knife Well, it’s a really big knife. According to the article, there are 85 different functions. Here’s a couple favorites:

  • Mineral crystal magnifier with precision screwdriver
  • Bike chain rivet setter, removable 5m allen wrench, screwdriver for slotted and Phillips head screws
  • Golf club face cleaner
  • Flashlight
  • Laser Pointer
  • Two(!) keyrings
  • Now this “knife” weighs two pounds and is nine inches long. I think I’ll just stick with my pocket knife with a couple blades and the different screw bits.

    Julia’s First Drawing

We were in Target today, and saw these big crayons that would be perfect for Julia to play with. Of course, we got the crayons and took Julia home to draw something.

Now maybe drawing isn’t the best term, and Sharon did help Julia get the crayon on by holding the paper and handing her the crayons. But the scribbling action back and forth – now that’s all Julia.

    BabySplat

I was surfing over on Lifehacker a couple days ago and noticed a program called BabySplat. It’s a wonderful little program that will put random lines or shapes on the screen and play a noise with any key press.

Julia was facinated by the noise and the lines/shapes. But she kept holding down the keys and the program kept on putting more lines and shapes down, and made only the first bits of noise. Still, it got us quite the laugh to see Julia staring down the lines as they popped up on the screen.

    SongTapper

I saw a link to a site called SongTapper, where you can figure out a song title from just tapping the song using your space bar. It’s really neat.

I tried a couple songs out, and it displayed the song I was tapping out. You can listen to the song in iTunes too.

    Cheap PCs

I saw that you can get a decent PC from Dell for cheap. It’s got 1GB ram, 160GB hard drive, DVD burner, and a 17″ LCD. All for $350, plus tax (at least in NC), and (presumably) shipping. If I needed a spare PC, I would definitely look at this.

    My Canon Powershot A700 Review

I have wanted a Canon Digital Rebel for a long time. I already have a Canon Rebel and an Olympus digital camera. But the Rebel takes film, and the Olympus is just old. I’ve had it for 3 or 4 years.

Since Julia was born, Sharon and I have been taking photographs like mad. The Olympus was too slow, ate batteries like candy, and only took mediocre pictures. The Rebel took much better pictures, but I paid for every pictures I took. We needed a new camera.

I tried to convince myself that I needed a Digital Rebel. The PMA, a huge photography trade show, was to be held at the end of February. I thought that a successor to the Digital Rebel XT would be announced, and I could get the XT on the cheap. Canon had other ideas, and announced a higher end model. I almost gt the Digital Rebel anyway.

I found the Canon Powershot A700 instead. It was only introduced in February, so I couldn’t find any reviews on it. So I took a chance on it anyway. I’m glad I did.

    Pros:

    • Totally manual control – 1/2000″ to 15″, f/2.8-8.0, ISO 80-800, and manual focus
    • Huge LCD screen
    • Movie mode – with sound! It will do 640×480 at 30fps until you fill out the memory card
    • Good image sensor
    • 6x optical zoom (like 35-210mm)
    • Picture burst mode – it will take about 2 pictures a second for a while. I’ve taken 60-70 in a single burst before I stopped.

    Cons:

    • Still a delay between pressing shutter and taking picture
    • 16MB SD card included – give me a break, that’s like 6 pictures at the highest settings
    • Autofocus could be better

So there you have it. For $300, you can get your hand on a very nice point and shoot digital camera with full manual control.

The beginning of the end for film cameras

I knew this day would eventually come. Nikon will be phasing out most of their film camera line. A high end camera and a lower end camera.

I’m a Canon man myself, and I use film, so this announcement doesn’t immediately affect me. But it wouldn’t surprise me to see Canon eventually follow suit and start to phase out their film line as well. I prefer my film camera to my digital, but my digital camera isn’t that good. I like to have the total manual control of my Canon Rebel.

Eventually, I would like to get a digital Canon Rebel, but I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of my film camera. There’s something refreshing to hear the shutter click and the film advance.

    Lego Mindstorms NXT

There is a facinating article on Wired talking about the new Lego Mindstorms NXT.

At first, I was skeptical of the whole idea behind programming Legos and making robots out of them. They are for building things. I’ve never really liked the idea of sets that are used for building specific things, like all the Star Wars sets.

After reading the article though, I really like these. It reminds me of a class I took in college, where Andrew and I programmed an RC car to track along a white strip of tape on the floor. I followed the schematics, Andrew did the programming. That was a really fun course, and it was gratifying to actually see the RC car run on the track.

Maybe when our child is a bit older, we’ll be getting this for them. But that would be a long way off, and our kid might not be interested. So to play it safe, I might just need to get it for me instead…

    Toothbrush Sanitizer

I don’t know if it really works, but a toothbrush sanitizer would at least make me think my toothbrush is clean. Put the toothbrush in the case, turn the thing on, and your toothbrush is clean. Or so they claim. The UV light would kill any nasty buggers on the brush.

That’s fine and all, but why couldn’t I turn on a UV light next to my toothbrush and accomplish the same thing?
